Direction artistique: Martin MargielaDesigned by Ania Martchenko
The LOTTE Museum of Art presents Martin Margiela at LOTTE Museum of Art, a deep dive into the groundbreaking visual art of Martin Margiela (b. 1957), an artist known for challenging conventions since the 1980s.
Featuring over 50 works, the exhibition explores Margiela’s reflections on art, material, the body, gender, time, and audience interaction. Expanding beyond his Maison Martin Margiela days, the show transforms his experimental runway concepts into boundary-pushing visual art. The museum space becomes a platform for rethinking formats, blending and transforming mediums, and fostering alternative perspectives.
The exhibition incorporates trompe l'œil illusions, a reimagined layout, and multi-medium works like Deodorant (2022), Top Coat (2011), and Dust Cover (2021), which probe beauty, absence, and traces of existence. Vertical blinds create a labyrinthine flow, encouraging focus and reflection.
Margiela’s work, though echoing his fashion legacy, stands as a distinct visual culture, redefining artistic conventions.
